Description: |
421 State Street, Towanda, PA, 1862-1864. Original chapel door and window from house at Towanda. Door details - "The door of the first chapel in which Archbishop Wood said the first mass on the Feast of Saint Michael, Sept. 29, 1862. Marion McKay, a postulant, was clothed as Sr. Mary Cornelia at this time. This first chapel was on the second floor in the SE corner of the building. The door opened from the passageway into the chapel and was located to the right at the top of the stairs." Window details - "On the second floor, further to the right of the chapel, was a small room with one window, at the SW corner of the house. This room was shared by MM Xavier Noble and Sr. Lucy Ignatia Newsham. This is the upper section of that one window. The glass is probably original to the building, and shows characteristic waviness of early windows." |
